Project Overview

Histatin 5, a powerful antimicrobial peptide found in human saliva, is effective against oral pathogens and supports wound healing. Despite its therapeutic potential, Histatin 5’s clinical application is limited by its instability and rapid degradation in the oral environment due to enzymatic activity and salivary flow. To maximize its efficacy, it is essential to develop a formulation that protects Histatin 5 and ensures its sustained release.

This project outlines the development of a mouthwash formulation incorporating Histatin 5 with carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and zinc. CMC is known for its mucoadhesive properties and ability to form gels, which can protect Histatin 5 from degradation and enhance retention. Zinc, on the other hand, has been shown to have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which may complement the effects of Histatin 5 and further improve oral health outcomes.
